On August 6th 2020, our Early Detection Team discovered a plant in the eastern portion of our region, known as twin leaf (Jeffersonia diphylla). According to Natural Heritage there are only two species, the other of which grows in Mongolia.
This species is listed as ‘threatened’ in New York State and likely to become endangered in the foreseeable future. It is considered as imperiled in New York meaning that it is very vulnerable to disappearing from New York due to rarity or other factors.
The small population discovered in our region is being threatened by encroaching populations of swallow-wort. SLELO will be discussing possible protection efforts with the appropriate land managers and biologists.
