SLELO PRISM will be joining the Adirondack Mountain Club Black River Chapter on Sunday, January 5th at 1 pm on Poor Island in Black River, NY.
What to Expect: You will enjoy a nice winter hike and learn about an invasive forest pest that is threatening our hemlock forests called hemlock woolly adelgid. You will learn the signs of infestation to watch for and how to report observations using a mobile app called iMapInvasives.
Before you Come: Attendees are encouraged to make a free iMapInvasives user account and to download the free iMapInvasives mobile app onto your smartphones (if you don’t have a smartphone you can still participate, there is also an online version you can use with a desktop computer).
Trail Description: This is an easy wooded outing of about 1.5-2 miles along the shores of an island in the Black River. Trails are flat with the exception of a few very small hills. Some parts of the trail are exposed to the wind off the river, so wear appropriate clothing. We will ski, snowshoe, or walk the trail whatever nature dictates, bring your own gear. The trip will take between 1-2 and a half hours depending on abilities.
Directions: From Watertown, go out Route 3 to the light at the intersection with Main
Street in Black River (Stewarts is on the corner.). Turn left at this light. Just before the next bridge over the river,
make a right on St. Regis St. There is also a small brown sign saying Kamargo Recreation Area. The bridge to the island is just a few yards down; cross it to the parking area on the island we will meet in this parking area at 1 pm. Here is a link to GoogleMaps.
